Learning Outcome #3: Active Reading
I found after each reading, I had a greater understanding of the topics we were covering in class. It gave me the chance to organize my thoughts on the readings so I could not only participate in class but begin brainstorming ideas for the actual papers. This assignment was beneficial because in a way it was like two birds with one stone; accomplishing the reading for class while recording our thoughts so we didn’t have to do as much thinking later on. For example, in “Men Explain Things To Me”, it got me thinking about how different experiences effect men and woman differently based on gender. In turn, I was able to incorporate these thoughts into my paper and state valid points in class. Sometimes I found it difficult to find things to annotate like in “The Slippery Slope of Silencing’s”. I related to the beginning of the article but as it went on, I was confused. Using the categories like questioning, and understanding helped me write down my thoughts to clarify later, and further develop my comprehension of the claims made. I also enjoyed extending what was written in the papers to my own thoughts, a lot of which connected to my major, Sociology.

Men Explain Things to Me –
Page 1, Line 8: They stayed the whole party just to talk to one guy?
Page 1, Line 16: It seems like this guy doesn’t really value their time.
Page 1, Line 22: His own authority is the only thing he values.
Page 2, Line 28: What gives men the idea that they can put themselves above others?
Page 2, Line 36 – 37: It’s frustrating that the statement ‘being women’ holds a standard to us, an expectation others have set for us and we unintentionally follow.
Page 2, Line 55 – 56: Women are very publicly discussed and often embarrassed, why doesn’t that happen to men as much?
The Slippery Slope of Silencing –
Page 1, Line 1 -2: What does hold forth mean? To talk at length
Page 1, Line 13 – 14: Ignorance
Page 1, Line 18 – 19: It frustrates me knowing there are young girls out there who have a lot to say and aspire to do something great but will face conflict from a mans perspective around every corner.
Page 1, Paragraph 5: This reminded me about something I learned in Sociology class, the assumption that total self-confidence can lead to a “God-Complex”. While most men don’t meet the full standards of this, there are too many who place themselves higher than the rest. They need to be humbled.
Page 2, Line 47 – 48: Violence or threats are often used to belittle and silence women.
Page 2, Line 50 – 51: This is a really scary statistic but goes to show what others will do to cover their own backs.
Page 2, Line 54: I agree with this statement but what if others wont listen? Regardless of legal standings, there’s still loopholes to void the credibility and audibility of statements.
Page 2, Line 69: This description of a female is infuriating, it uses labels that should have been left in the 1900’s
